TÜMATA was established in 1976 by Asst. Prof. Dr. Rahmi Oruç Güvenç to research and promote the inception, development, healing aspects and repertoire and instrumental diversity of Turkish music. Consisting of musicians and storytellers, the TÜMATA community is also a caravan of travelers. The group brings together ancient sounds, words, instruments and dances that have changed and transformed as they travelled across millennia to reach our present day, fusing them together with the spirit of our time. Rarely heard

sounds are brought back to life in the project, in which stories and music feed off one another. As such, the group intends to heal by replacing sounds and words that stifle the human spirit with fine sounds and words. The travelers of the caravan symbolize and enact the Ancestral spirits that originate from thousands of years ago, which still roam among us and protect us. As they bear the torch of tradition, they also say new things, and work for the “breathing” aspect of our culture.
