Christian is the well respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced man with two children who drives an electric car and contributes to charities. His next show will be an installation titled “The Square” which invites passers-by to sacrifice, and reminds them that they are responsible people. But it can sometimes be hard to take steps that fit your principles: Christian’s silly response to his phone being stolen will end up embarrassing him. As he struggles with his problems, the PR agency of the museum prepares a surprising publicity campaign for “The Square”, and the reaction to the campaign draws Christian and the museum into an existential crisis.
