Described as “A nightmare set in a fairy tale world” and “a Columbian take on Lord of the Flies”, Monos was praised by Guillermo del Toro as “a fascinating film from a new and strong director”. Eight child soldiers who have adopted warrior names among the threatening shadows of a dense forest are holding an American woman hostage in a location reminiscent of a summer camp. A surprise raid ends the relatively quiet days of the children, and with their mutual trust shaken, the group end up having to leave their base and take refuge deep in the woods. Columbia’s candidate for the Oscar, Monos centers on a group of adolescent heroes influenced more by hormones than ideology, and tells an extraordinary, fantastic tale of battle and survival.
