The Master of Suspense finalised his magnificent career with a crime comedy that recalls the quirky humour of his British period. Adapted by Ernest Lehman, the screenwriter of North by Northwest, from the Victor Canning’s novel The Rainbird Pattern, the film transfers the story from England to California and follows a fraud spiritualist and her taxi driver boyfriend as they take over the task of finding the lost heir of a rich woman. Although the engaging adventure lacks the habitual tone of a Hitchcock film, it does employ the usual mathematics and meticulousness. Shot mostly in a studio although some external scenes were shot on location in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Family Plot’s score was composed by John Williams who was then celebrated with Jaws’s score.
