Filmed immediately after The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries is one of Ingmar Bergman’s more optimistic and humorous films. Victor Sjöström, a renowned actor of the silent film era, plays in his final performance the 78 year old retired doctor Isak Borg who travels from Stockholm to Lund to receive an award. The hitchikers he meets on the country roads leads the recitent and cold doctor who is feeling the effects of his old age to go back to revisit his own past and his memories. Bergman penned the screenplay for Wild Strawberries while hospitalized, and the film navigates between dreams, memories and roads, telling a multilayered road story on the missed opportunities of youth and parent-child relationships.
