The latest film by François Ozon, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival’s main competition in February, is a strong and compassionate drama that views the cases of pedophilia perpetrated by Catholic clergymen from the standpoint of the victims. In the present day, the film follows three adult men, Alexandre, François and Gilles. Learning that the priest who abused them in their childhood still works with children and has not even received a warning from the church, these three hurting spirits decide to free themselves from the “burden of silence” as their own memories resurface. Inspired by true events and receiving acclaim as one of Ozon’s best films, By the Grace of God treats the notions of trauma and courage with great subtlety.
