The son of a Turkish immigrant family in Germany, Oray has been involved in crime in his early youth and served time in prison. In his new life in which he has found happiness with his wife Burcu, he tries to stay away from his old habits, but is drawn into the Islamist movements in Germany. One day, after an argument with his wife, he utters the words “boş ol”, which denote the intention to divorce in Islam. An imam he consults tells him that he must stay away from his wife for three months. He goes to Cologne, where he waits for the three months to elapse, but another imam he meets in Cologne argues that they must separate completely. The director comments that he has sought answers to the question of “what it means to be a Muslim and seek to express oneself through religion in a Western, democratic, secular country”.
