In Happy End, which competed at the Cannes Film Festival this year, Haneke revisits his distinctive themes of problematic families, revenge between generations and ravaging repressed guilt, while showing the refugee crisis in Europe in the background. The life of the Laurent family, leading an apparently comfortable and wealthy life in Calais in Northern France, goes off the rails with the arrival of Eve, who enters their life due to unexpected events. The constant family problems and their meticulously kept secrets are no longer bearable. Haneke once again brings the harshest critique upon today’s world and human relations without compromise.
