The latest film by Wang Xiaoshuai, director of Beijing Bicycle, Drifters, 11 Flowers and Red Amnesia, was acclaimed as an “epic melodrama”, and brought both its lead actors Silver Bear Awards. The film follows a couple who deeply experience the destructive effects of China’s one child policy through 30 years of their lives. Observing the social transformation that followed the economic growth of the country, the film touches on such notions as love, friendship, childbearing, sorrow and forgiveness.
