Leningrad, 1971. Russian writer Sergei Dovlatov, who will go on to attain posthumous fame, spends his days pursuing a membership to the Writers’ Union, a precondition for his writings being published, and working on minor writing projects, meeting the artists and writers of the town in parties where jazz music is played at night. In his new film which had its world premiere at Berlin, Alexey German Jr., director of Under Electric Clouds, tells the story of six days in Dovlatov’s life, through which he presents a portrait of the intellectual circle of the time and their relationships with Brejnev-era Soviet Union. The director renders the screenplay full of references ranging from John Steinbeck to Vladimir Nabokov with enchantingly choreographed scenes.
